Good Backup handles routine system-file skips on Mac and Windows

Mac 0.1.6 and Windows 0.1.1 exclude known OS-managed locations. A saved snapshot with only those narrowly identified system-file errors can finish successfully; unreadable personal files still make the backup incomplete.

AvailabilityThis was a public GitHub beta milestone. The current Good Backup release is Mac 0.1.7 and Windows 0.1.2; Linux remains at 0.1.0.

Good Backup 0.1.6 for Apple Silicon Mac and 0.1.1 for Windows x64 were publicly released October 16, 2026. This October 17 note records the intermediate milestone; the later 0.1.7 Mac and 0.1.2 Windows release is now the current download.

01

A narrow policy for operating-system files

Mac skips known system-managed document-version stores and transient Dia favicon cache items. Windows skips known volume metadata, recycle-bin contents, and paging or hibernation files. The selected personal folders and drives are not broadly excluded.

When restic saves a snapshot but reports only these specifically recognized OS-managed items unreadable, the run can be treated as complete. An unreadable personal file still makes the result incomplete or failed, with details to inspect. The Mac app does not rewrite old incomplete results: a new run is needed to receive the updated assessment.

02

Windows compatibility and release state

The Windows build removes a restic option unsupported on that platform. Its local tests cover the narrow skip classification, but the package has not yet passed a real Windows PC backup-and-restore trial.

The October 16 GitHub prerelease carried Mac 0.1.6 and Windows 0.1.1. Later that day, Good Backup 0.1.7 and Windows 0.1.2 superseded those downloads with reconnection-key safeguards. Linux remains on 0.1.0.
