Good Backup opens its early Nextcloud beta

The first public packages cover Apple Silicon Mac, Windows x64, and Linux x64. Mac beta 0.1.2 adds clearer incomplete-backup reporting; Windows and Linux remain at 0.1.0 and need device testing.

Good Backup is an early desktop beta for keeping encrypted, compressed computer backups in your own Nextcloud. Its first public Mac, Windows, and Linux packages were released September 28 in Saskatchewan (September 29 UTC). Mac 0.1.2 followed September 29; this entry is posted September 30.

01

What the beta is for

Choose folders or drives, connect to Nextcloud, and keep each computer in a separate vault under the parent folder you select. The app offers scheduled backups, pause controls, health checks, snapshot browsing, and restore controls.

These controls are not a guarantee that a particular computer is protected. Keep an existing backup until you have completed and verified both a backup and a restore of your own data.

02

Mac 0.1.2

The current Apple Silicon Mac package is 0.1.2. It avoids a narrow set of macOS-managed FileProvider tombstones, CoreSpeech caches, and a protected Control Center preference that could make snapshots appear incomplete. It does not silently ignore unreadable personal files; those still produce an incomplete result.

The alert now gives a shorter summary while Activity retains the skipped paths. The Mac app also shows running manual or scheduled jobs, with a scanning state followed by backup progress. The 0.1.2 package and version are present in the public release and local app bundle.

03

Windows and Linux

The Windows x64 and Linux x64 packages remain at 0.1.0. They were built and statically checked, but an end-to-end backup and restore on those operating systems has not been verified. Linux scheduling requires a desktop keyring and systemd user timers.

Do not treat the newer Mac version as a Windows or Linux update. The Good Tools download links retain the platform-specific versions.

04

Release and testing boundary

Public GitHub releases contain the 0.1.0 packages for all three platforms and the 0.1.2 Mac update. Local Mac testing has exercised real snapshot work, including cases that reported skipped protected files. A complete backup-and-restore cycle is still the safety gate before depending on this beta as your only backup.
